Scientific talent responds to society for the results obtained with the donations made to La Marató
One person in four in Catalonia has diabetes or obesity, the two most frequent metabolic diseases and the ones to which La Marató was dedicated in 2015. The goals of that edition were to raise awareness about diseases that are widespread but are nevertheless surrounded by social lack of understanding, and to boost scientific research in order to gain more years and greater quality of life for people who are affected.
Anna Boadas and Toni Cruanyes on TV3, and Ricard Ustrell on Catalunya Radio, hosted 22 hours of live programming in which awareness-raising, spreading information and entertainment joined hands to give a face to the statistics of diabetes and obesity. Witnesses, doctors and artists in the radio and television studios, along with thousands of members of the public, associations and businesses throughout Catalonia, featured in a day-long charity event that ended with a final scoreboard showing 9.469.226 €.
These resources made it possible for 57 research teams to dedicate these last three years to researching the causes, treatments and prevention of diabetes and obesity through the 33 projects that were funded. They were selected from among the 136 presented in response to the call, in a process of evaluation that was co-ordinated by the Catalan Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Research (AQuAS)), in which 65 international experts in diabetes and obesity assessed their quality, methodology, scientific and social health relevance, innovative value and viability.
Now the Foundation is presenting the result of intense research activity that is the fruit of the support, the emotion, the effort and the social confidence that have made a direct and positive impact on the health of the community as a whole.
57 research teams received grants from La Marató 2015 for 33 projects on diabetes and obesity, some single-centre projects and others co-ordinated in different centres.
